Next time you are indulging in a relaxing stroll through Titchwell or Snettisham RSPB Reserves, whether seriously birding or simply enjoying the pleasant surroundings, spare a moment to appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes to make your visit so worthwhile,

We all know what can happen to our gardens, when we neglect them for a mere two weeks to go on holiday during the summer. Similarly a small garden pond can very rapidly become choked with weed, if not regularly cleared out. Just imagine what a bird reserve would look like, if it was not continuously maintained! The wardens and site managers and their staff do a tremendous job, but the sheer scale of the work involved in maintaining many hectares of reedbeds, meadows, islands and lagoons means that they cannot do it unaided.

This is where you come in! Could you give a day of your time, on a regular or ad hoc basis! Some of the work already carried out this year has included cutting the Fen Meadow at Titchwell and piling up the vegetation, which will rot and provide habitat piles, and pulling up weeds on the roost bank at Snettisham. Sounds like hard work, but the saying 'many hands make light work' was certainly true in these cases and everyone enjoyed their exertions and the knowledge that they had done their bit for wildlife

Work planned for the autumn includes reed cutting and collecting up the materials cut from the islands in the Brackish Marsh at Titchwell and burning them. At Snettisham, beach cleaning is the main priority and, in both cases, necessary equipment and clothing will be provided.

So, how about it! Male or female, young or not so young, you could make a difference. Ring Ken Bayliss on 01485 600446 for more information and dates and give it a go!
